Each year the Organization for the Protection
of Children’s Rights (O.P.C.R.) organizes several special
events in order to add some happiness in the lives of underprivileged
children.
Some people think that all children never lack
anything and are happy because they were born in Canada; however,
nothing can be more incorrect. To different extents, certain children
have experienced violence, poverty and lack of affection, all of which
have particularly harmful effects on them. In fact, one child out
of every 5 children in Canada lives in poverty, namely an increase
of 39 % since 1989. The number of poor households has risen by 34
% at the beginning of 1990. Moreover, in 1999, 21.6 % of children
in Quebec and 16.5 % of children in Ontario were poor (Campaign
2000).
The mission of the O.P.C.R. is
to provide support for those families who are experiencing problems
resulting from family conflicts and from the break up of the family.
The break up of the family often results in negative effects in the
life of the children who are affected by such a situation. In 1992,
Statistic Canada published astonishing information : the poverty rate
among single-parent was 56.8 % (single mothers) and 30.7 % (single
fathers), compared to 12.8 % among two parent families. Underprivileged
children may experience certain disturbances that may lead to delinquent
behaviors and severe consequences in the future. We must act now in
order to prevent and comfort these children.
It is necessary to come to the aid of these children
immediately to ensure a healthy development to which they are entitled.
This development includes participating in their cultural and social
lives. It is because not all children have equal opportunities that
the O.P.C.R. works so hard to ensure that more than
1,000 underprivileged children aged between 4 and 12 from the Montreal
and Quebec city regions participate in the events it organizes for
them each and every year: Christmas
Shows, Summer
Camps and others.
These activities give the children and adolescents
the opportunity to get together, play and have a great time together!
We are very well aware of the fact that the pleasure and joy we offer
these young ones represent only a tiny part of what we can do to improve
their outlook, but these children largely benefit from these activities
and have incredible memories as well. Through our efforts, the example
we set and with the community’s help, we may overcome the social
isolation which hinders the healthy development of these children.
Since the foundation of the O.P.C.R., 11,000 underprivileged
children have taken part in the activities organized for them. The
objectives of the O.P.C.R. also include extending
its activities to children from other provinces.
You, as well, can offer these young, underprivileged
children a touch of happiness by sponsoring the activities of the
Organization for the Protection of Children’s Rights.
Children are our future !
Yes ! I wish to sponsor the activities
organized by the O.P.C.R. which benefit underprivileged children:
