Children and Violence: Our Individual, Family and Collective Responsibilities
The Organization for the Protection of Children’s Rights (O.P.C.R.) organized a 4th International Conference on the Child with the theme: Children and Violence : Our Individual, Family and Collective Responsibilities. The conference was held on October 13, 14, 15, 2002 at the Sheraton Laval and united 172 speakers from 25 different countries.
The well defined objectives of this conference included the development of preventive solutions to counter the increase in number of youth related, violent activities and proposed recommendations to establish preventive programs and policies
The delegates discussed the phenomena of violence and children in all its possible forms:
Media and Violence;
Violence and Intervention Programs in Schools;
Consequences of a Divorce;
The Effects of Pollution and Violence Committed in Developing Countries: Prostitution and Children Exploited in the Work Force.

At the time this 4th Conference was held, almost one decade had elapsed since the ratification of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child; however, the situation had simply worsened. All types of violence on children are not acceptable and no society should tolerate this.

You may take cognizance of the results of this 4th Conference by consulting the Montreal Declaration to End Violence Against Children. This document was forwarded to the Secretary General of the United Nations and to its 188 member countries.

You may access the Conference Proceedings prepared by the O.P.C.R. which includes the speakers’ presentations as well.

You may also consult the Final Program of the 4th Conference to find out more about the speakers and the themes discussed during the conference and workshops.
